How You Can Help Minimize the Heat Leaving Your Home

December 22, 2017

With the colder weather settling in, the last thing you want to have to worry about is sustaining a comfortable home. In an ideal world, you would be able to relax in a warm home and not thinking twice about what’s taking place outside. Of course, things don’t work that way, and there are a few things that could be occurring in your home that may require furnace repair or trying to figure out why your bill is so high.

There are a number of causes for an increase in your energy bill, but these are three of the more common ones we typically hear about at.

  1. Heat is getting out through the glass of your windows – the glass on your windows are cold from the outdoor temps and when the warm air makes contact, the indoor air becomes cooler. To help reduce the effect that the glass has on your cozy home, make sure you’re closing your drapes during the evening hours and only opening drapes on windows receiving light during the day.
  2. Lack of attic insulation – if your home is older, there’s a chance that there is a lack of insulation. This means you could be losing heat through your attic, which forces your furnace to work harder to keep up, and might eventually result in furnace repair. You can easily check if you have enough insulation by looking in your attic to see if the insulation is below or even with the joists. When the insulation is even or below the joists, you likely need more insulation.
  3. Gaps in windows and doors – as you are taking a look to see if there are any gaps around your doors or windows, keep in mind that they aren’t always easy to notice. Be sure to thoroughly look at all of your windows and doors to determine whether weather stripping is needed take care of those gaps. As we mentioned with attic insulation, window and door gaps can force your furnace to work harder, making the possibility of furnace repair later even greater.
