Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

January 05, 2016

When winter strikes and we start taking calls about furnaces that aren't producing heat, most of them can be tracked back to a lack of regular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace issues are not addressed, your system could suddenly stop running and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are some warning signs you can look out for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system breaks down.

Furnace Age

The average life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's a safe bet to start furnace shopping now. Selecting a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make in an emergency. Give yourself enough time to look through and weigh all of your options.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they age and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been appropriately maintained. Envision the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that you could spend on a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last few years of a furnace's life are when your system incurs the most breakdowns. Take a moment to add up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the prior two years - a new system could be more cost effective.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any strange sounds coming from your system? Furnaces start making odd noises near the end of their lifecycle. If your furnace is cycling on and off frequently or blowing chilly air, it's time to consider getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home efficiently. Your home may start feeling stuffy and any family members with allergies could notice increased symptoms. A few other signs are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
